For many of us with kid, there is the endless question “What activities are there for my kids”? With spring break just ending, and summer break around the corner; there is still plenty of time to plan. One of my favorite activities for not only my kids, but for the entire family is called Kids ‘N’ Clay Pottery Studios. Now, depending on where you are located, there may not be actual Kids ‘N’ Clay in your area, however, there might be something similar to this kind of activity.

Kevin Nierman, Artist, is the founder of Kids ‘N’ Clay. The company headquarters is located in Berkeley, CA, and is located in a historic, landmarked Victorian in the center of Berkeley’s artists’ community. Since 1988, Kids 'N' Clay Pottery Studios have provided an ideal environment for children to explore their creativity while learning the craft of ceramics. http://www.kidsnclay.com/Page3.html
The concept of this studio is to offer creativity to children while having fun. At Kids 'N' Clay Pottery Studios, kids have the ability to work with the wet clay pottery wheel or paint the ready to paint pottery, at affordable prices, and in this economy that is a huge plus!

They offer infant impressions, birthday party events, ladies nights as well as ongoing classes for ages 3-18 years of age. During the school breaks they offer a variety of classes such as Summer Clay Camps, for kids of all ages. In addition, they also provide activities for preschools, Field Trips and Scouting.

Throughout the year, they are constantly hosting holiday events such as Easter, Christmas, Mother’s and Father’s Day just to name a few. One of my favorite special events that they hosted was last years “Fancy Nancy” event for Mother’s and Daughters. This event was a ton of fun. Although you needed to reserve your spot, for the fee they provided a ready to paint cup & saucer for the event. The two owners, Sheridan and Leanne, decorated the studio with food, and tablecloth’s, which created a very special Mother-Daughter atmosphere. In addition to the cup and saucer you could purchase the matching teapot, which I did, to complete the set.

This year, they have chosen another ready to paint piece for their second annual
“Fancy Nancy”, Mother/Daughter event. The chosen piece for decorating will be an adorable cupcake plate, with the ability to purchase a cake plate on a decorative rod iron stand. As a mother, having the ability to spend quality time with my kids in a fun, safe, and low cost environment makes this a place perfect to build wonderful memories.

At Kids ‘N’ Clay, kids experience the art of working with their hands, and learn the technique for creativity as well as the process for achieving their vision. I have found that this type of activity not only teaches creativity, but it teaches patience, the art of tranquility, as well as personal time.

HOW IT WORKS:
Kids ‘N’ Clay was originally designed for the creativity of children, however, it is just as much fun for the adults. This past week, I was able to head down to my local Kids ‘N’ Clay studio with my 13 year old to work on some of the projects that we started a week ago with the ready to paint creations. I chose an Easter plate, and she chose a mirror and a piggy bank. Not only was this fun as well as relaxing, the projects always turn out better that you expect. Another nice feature is the ability to work at your own pace. This means you don’t have to complete the piece in the same sitting. You can take your time to complete the project. Whether it takes you a day, a week or a month to complete the project, the time is yours. No pressure to hurry up and finish, which adds to the relaxing benefit of the atmosphere, which it provides. Once you have completed painting your project, you give the finished piece to one of the friendly staff. The process takes about one week, and they will call when it is ready.

I love this place. It is a great place for families, friends, organizations or just some creativity time. Sheridan and Leanne provide a warm, and inviting atmosphere for everyone. They are extremely helpful, and in times of “painters block” they are able to offer up their expertise, and suggestions to help you achieve your goal. The price range of pieces are very reasonable, and a sure crowd pleaser for any kind if special event that you want to have at Kids ‘N’ Clay. The ready to make pieces available make the perfect one of a kind gift for anyone, and any occasion. If you are in the Snohomish Washington area, come check them out. If not, check around to see if you have one of these types of establishments near you.

Over all, I would give them 5 out of 5 stars based on their atmosphere, they provide, the variety of things to do, and paint, as well as the friendly of the staff. The next time, you hear “I’m bored, there is nothing to do” check out Kids ‘N’ Clay.
